The Japanese watchmaking industry doesn’t scare the Swiss as much as it once did, yet it continues to fascinate us with its capacity for innovation. We can always learn from them. The 80s and the threat posed by the quartz watch to this economic sector so important to Switzerland are history. A Swiss delegation of watchmakers headed to Japan this spring to see the state of the country’s production apparatus. Three objectives were on the agenda: the “dark factory”, robotics and the factory of the future.
